Auricular acupuncture has been proven to be successful in the treatment of symptoms of dependency and withdrawal in people with substance abuse problems.  Regardless of the substance, numerous studies have validated the effectiveness auricular therapy for a variety of addictions.

WHAT IS AURICULAR  DETOX?

Auricular (ear) acupuncture has been helping alcoholics and those addicted to other substances at the Lincoln Hospital in New York since 1975 where Dr. Michael Smith and his staff treat hundreds of addicts each day.  The theory behind auricular acupuncture is that the entire body can be affected by stimulating points on the ear.  By stimulating five specific points in the ear profound positive effects can occur.  At the Lani’aina Wellness Center, we utilize Microlight technology to administer ‘needless” auricular therapy, achieving the same results as traditional ear acupuncture.

HOW DOES AURICULAR THERAPY WORK?

From a Chinese Medicine perspective, the ear points used for alcohol and chemical dependency are calming and regulate the Liver, Lung, and Kidney yin.  From a biomedical perspective, it stimulates nerve terminals responsible for the feeling of relaxation experienced. Acupuncture influences the neuro-chemical pathways of the brain's mesolimbic system which is responsible for reward and pleasure.

To overcome addiction, we need as many tools and weapons as we can find.  At the Lani'aina Wellness Center, we can offer you an important adjunct to your treatment program.  Auricular therapy is only one component of substance abuse treatment.  It is most successful when used in combination with conventional methods of psychosocial rehabilitation including twelve-step programs, herbal medicine, counseling, peer support and when appropriate, medical stabilization through psycho-pharmaceuticals.
